Two Years Later: South Carolina’s Confederate Flag in Storage Awaiting Display Exhibit

Two years ago, July 10, 2015, the Confederate flag was removed from South Carolina’s Statehouse grounds following the signing of a bill calling for its removal by former Gov. Nikki Haley.

Debate over removing the flag was sparked by a tragedy that happened less than a month before. On June 17, 2015, 21-year-old Dylann Roof shot and killed nine people in a Bible study at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston. Roof had posted photos of himself with the Confederate flag.

The Confederate flag was first flown atop the dome of the Statehouse on April 11, 1961, to celebrate the centennial anniversary of the Civil War.

In 2000, the South Carolina Heritage Act stated that the only flags that could fly atop the Statehouse dome were the United States flag and the South Carolina state flag...

South Carolina Parents Shocked by Their 14-Pound Newborn

When Cindy Richmond gave birth to her son, she had no idea he’d break records.

Her newborn, Colin Austin Keisler, weighed a whopping 14 pounds.

South Carolina parents Arthur Keisler and Cindy Richmond were shocked by their 14-pound newborn, Colin.

“I make ‘em big,” the proud father, Arthur Keisler, of Lexington, South Carolina, told ABC News. “The room completely changed as soon as they got him out. The doctor said, ‘Whoa, this is a big baby.’

“You could hear the other nurses in the room trying to guess how big he was. They said, ‘We need to weigh him right now.’ They pulled the scale into the operating room and the room erupted into like, ‘Oh, my God, this is the craziest thing ever.’”

South Carolina Recruiting: Bryce Thompson De-Commits from Virginia Tech

The decision comes nearly 11 months after his pledge to the Hokies.

North Carolina State, South Carolina and Washington State are among his other Power 5 offers.

The Gamecock coaches got another in-person look at Thompson last Wednesday when he attended the second session of the Will Muschamp Football Camp. He worked primarily at defensive back with Travaris Robinson, but also slid over to wide receiver for reps during the 1-on-1 portion of camp.

Earlier this year, Thompson told SEC Country he’s being recruited by South Carolina to play as a nickel back and/or safety.

“I want to make sure that my whole family to be at every home game, too. I keep that in mind,” he said, during an interview in February. “My coaches, my high school coaches don’t have to go far to watch me play...

Baltimore discloses 6 finalists for speed camera contract

Baltimore officials on Wednesday disclosed the names of the six firms that are competing to win the city’s potentially lucrative speed and red light camera contract.

The six finalists are: American Traffic Solutions, GATSO USA, Optotraffic LLC, Redflex Traffic Systems, SENSYS America and Conduent Incorporated.

The city had withheld the names of the vendors for months. But on Wednesday, after repeated requests by The Baltimore Sun and other news organizations, city lawyers authorized the release of the names.

“The Law Department has determined that there is no competitive harm to releasing the following names,” Anthony McCarthy, spokesman for Mayor Catherine Pugh, wrote in an email.

Pugh is planning to relaunch Baltimore’s once-troubled speed and red light camera system as early as June — p...

For Baltimore Food Entrepreneurs, Farmers’ Markets Serve as Launching Pad for Permanent Shops

Nikhil “Nick” Yesupriya remembers exactly what he ate the first time he visited Blacksauce Kitchen at the Baltimore Farmers’ Market and Bazaar: braised pear on a biscuit with the sage on top.

“That just blew me away,” he said.

Still in college at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, Yesupriya would return to his dorm to tell his friend Steve Chu about what he tasted. Seeing the power of two guys with a barbecue pit changed the way he thought about food, he said.

Blacksauce would ultimately spark inspiration for Chu and Yesupriya to team up with another college friend, Ephrem Abebe, and take their Asian comfort cuisine to the Fells Point Farmers’ Market under the brand Ekiben. Now, Blacksauce and Ekiben have grown beyond their farmers’ market roots to open brick-and-mortar shops.
